The United States has announced sanctions on Thursday against 19 Russian citizens and five groups for malicious cyber activity, including interference in the 2016 elections and cyber attacks, as reported by the Treasury Department.

“The Administration confronts and combats Russian malicious cyber-activity, including its attempt to interfere with US elections, destructive cyber attacks and intrusions against critical infrastructure,” Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said in a statement.

Mnuchin has indicated that additional sanctions are planned against Russian government officials and oligarchs.

US intelligence agencies have concluded that Russia interfered with the 2016 presidential campaign with hacks and propaganda, in an effort that eventually sought to tip the scales on the side of now President Donald Trump, something that Moscow denies.
